Bayesian Estimation of a Censored AIDS Model for Whole Grain Products AgEcon

When using household-level data in examining consumer's demand it is common to find that consumers purchase only a subset of the available goods, setting the demand for the remaining goods to zero. Ignoring such censoring of the dependent variables in the estimation can lead to biased parameter estimates. In this paper we investigate the household's demand for six types of whole grain and non-whole grain breakfast cereals and products using a censored Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) and estimate the parameters of the demand system via Bayesian methods. Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of fertilization with nitrogen topdressing and silicates, as well as of the use of fungicides, on the occurrence of rice blast on panicles, milling yield, and whole grains, vitreous grains, and chalky kernels in a flood-irrigated rice cultivar sensitive to the disease. Possible Implications for U.S. Agriculture From Adoption of Select Dietary Guidelines AgEcon

To help Americans meet nutritional requirements while staying within caloric recommendations, the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole-grain products, and fat-free or low-fat milk or milk products. This report provides one view of the potential implications for U.S. agriculture if Americans changed their current consumption patterns to meet some of those guidelines. For Americans to meet the fruit, vegetable, and whole-grain recommendations, domestic crop acreage would need to increase by an estimated 7.4 million harvested acres, or 1.7 percent of total U.S. cropland in 2002.
